If you’re happy and you know it, Weight Watchers says you probably shouldn’t be…

When Can I Get Some Food Around Here_MASSIVE MEGA TRIGGER WARNING.  I’m going to be talking about an unbelievably annoying Weight Watchers ad.  If you don’t want to hear about a lot of icky concern trolling, food phobic, fat phobic nonsense, please skip to the bottom and look at the video with the Sparta the fighting Kitty in it.  (‘Cuz Sparta rules!)  Otherwise read on.

Scrolling through my facebook feed, I saw a post from a friend of mine calling out a recent ad from Weight Watchers.  Here it is, watch at your own peril…

Okay, let’s break this down.  Weight Watchers took a happy little children’s song that happens to be all about being happy right now as you are and letting everybody around you know the same thing and turned it into a fat-phobic hate fest.  It basically says, if you’re happy and you know it, and you happen to also, you know, eat something, then you are bad.  If you are sad and you eat something you are bad.  In fact if you are doing anything in the whole wide world other than calculating the WW Points value of anything you are eating to eight decimal places, you are bad.  Because clearly, experiencing any emotion at all at the same time means you are EMOTIONALLY EATING.  (Well at least emotionally snacking to be precise about the lyrics.)  And everybody knows emotional eating is bad, right?  RIGHT?!

Except kind of not.  Just because we are eating an ice cream cone or potato chips or broccoli while we are sad or happy or lonely or angry or bored doesn’t mean we are eating those things because we are daring to have feels while we are putting food in our mouths.  It doesn’t mean that that food has no nutritional value or we are somehow not allowed to eat those things while we are feeling all the feels.  It’s the whole correlation versus causation argument demonstrated using snack foods and a rhyming children’s song.  I simply refuse to submit to the notion that the only feelings I am allowed to feel while masticating my meals is either:

1.  Guilt because clearly I am ingesting too many WW (TM) points, or

2.  Smug righteousness because I am ingesting the proper number of WW (TM) points.

Because, best I can tell, the commercial indicates that I shouldn’t eat when I am:

happy

sad

angry

bored

sleepy

human

Which pretty much covers all of the things.  Which means I am not supposed to eat any more ever.  (Which is kind of counter intuitive, because then how could I buy all the WW frozen, tasteless, low-points, you know, THINGS?)

No freaking way.  Sometimes when I am happy I will eat ice cream.  Sometimes when I am happy I will eat salad.  These conditions are also true if I am sad or lonely or bored or angry.  I am an emotional  person.  Hell, sometimes I dance around the living room at the mere thought of ice cream.  I have a special SONG I sing almost every night to signal that it is time to wear my jammies.    If I find that I am using food as a primary method for avoiding the feeling of any of these feelings, I may or may not choose to find some help to change that.  But I guaran-freaking-tee you that I won’t be seeking help from the double doubleyou.  But there is no way at all, that I’m going to let some company tell me that it is not okay to have feelings and eat at the same time.  Because I want to live!*

*Oh, in the interest of full disclosure, while I am from a “Jazzed Up Generation”, I haven’t killed anybody and most of my friends are pretty good.  Just so you know.

I want to live.  And I refuse to let a weight loss company tell me how I can live, including when I can be happy or when I can eat.  Or when I can look at ADORABLE CAT VIDEOS like the one below.

Fat Hating German Gym Ad May Make You Stabby

haters-gonna-hate-catWarning, the bulk of this blog post (#450!) is likely to make you really, really mad.  If you don’t want to be mad today, might I suggest you refer to fluffy kitty picture above.  You can read his caption, “haters gonna hate,” and come to the same conclusion without needing to view a smug, stupid video ad from a smug stupid gym.  You’ve been warned.

For those of you who are moving on, I was on a site featuring “funny ads” and I came across this gem:


Oh my goodness.  He’s “fat” (but not really).  His pants button popped off with SUCH FORCE it hit that poor, gorgeous woman in the head and killed her.  Which, is like of course perfect, because you know, fat kills.

You see what I did there?

Do you think for one minute that this ad really cares about the fate of fat people?  Because I sure don’t.  I think this ad is for skinny people.  It reminds them that fat people are the “punch line”, are the butt of the joke, are worthy of scorn.  It reminds them that fat people are justifiable targets because, you know, health and stuff.  It says, go to the gym and get skinny or we’ll target you next.  And it will be okay, it won’t be morally reprehensible to target you, because, you know, health and stuff.

We know that shame doesn’t work.  Shame does not get fat people to exercise, or eat well, or change their habits in any positive way.  Even if fat people could statistically become thin people (which mostly they can’t) fat people wouldn’t do that because of this ad.

But this ad is not about shame.  This ad is about fear.  “Come join our elite gym so you can remain one of the ones with thin privilege.  OMG you don’t want to become one of those icky fat people do you?  Ewwww!”

What we know, is that in and of itself, fat doesn’t kill.  Overweight people live statistically as long as thin people and obese people who engage in healthy behavior live statistically as long and about as well as thin people who engage in the same behaviors.

What we also know is that fat hatred kills.  It kills because of the stress and the prejudice.  It kills because fat people are afraid to go to the doctor.  It kills because we are misdiagnosed when we get there.

The ad says, fat kills, kill fat.  I think it’s not such a stretch to convert this to what is actually meant, “say fat kills, and you’ll kill fat people.”  But the ad is okay, because you know, funny.

Not.

If you want to exercise, do that.  Dance, hop, swing, play, skip and do whatever makes your heart happy!  But I for one, don’t plan to give any money to an organization that teaches people how to hate me.

Thursday Theater: Nike Ad Featuring Fit Fatty Runs During 2012 Olympics

I have to admit that I was pretty excited to see this Nike ad pop up during the Olympics.  When the jogger trotted into view I held my breath waiting for them to say something nasty.  After watching all those perfect bodies in spandex, this kid was a breath of fresh air.  And I have to say, that for the most part I think Nike got it right.

To me, this kid embodies the awesome spirit of the joy of fitness that I try to share on The Fat Chick website.  He embodies the nearly 1,000 Fathletes featured in the Fit Fatties Forum which I host with the amazing Ragen Chastain.  He’s out there doing it.  He’s not limping along.  His pace is steady.  His breathing is even.  There’s nothing tongue-in-cheek or sarcastic about it.  He’s just going out for an every-day training run.  And kicking butt.

The voiceover reads: “Greatness, it’s just something we made up.  Somehow we’ve come to believe that greatness is a gift, reserved for a chosen few, for prodigies, for superstars.  And the rest of us can only stand by watching.  You can forget that.  Greatness is not some rare DNA strand.  It’s not some precious thing.  Greatness is no more unique to us than breathing.  We’re all capable of it.  All of us.”  Cue the logo text that reads: “Find Your Greatness”.

Now, I imagine, given the assumptions of our culture and the placement of the ad within the Olympics with its flood of conventionally beautiful and chiseled bodies that some viewers will add their own subscript stating “this kid needs to lose weight to be great.”  But luckily nothing in the V.O. or text that says anything about finding greatness “within”.  It’s talking about finding your greatness and is part of a group of ads featuring other unconventional athletes like this one, and this one and this one.  Frankly, I wish the voiceover from this ad could be on the ad with the fat kid, but still.  For the most part, I found myself giddy with excitement when I saw this one.

And yes, Nike could make a lot more fitness clothes in much bigger sizes.  I wish they did.  Although they do have a few pieces of plus-sized wear that are 1-3x (generously sized) that I have purchased and I absolutely adore.  But there’s not a whole lot to choose from.

So, perfect?  No, far from it.  But I think, with this ad campaign, Nike displayed a potential for greatness.
